Chapter 45: Farewell and Reflection

After several months of not updating my blog, I have now reached a conclusion that I will wrap everything’s up, reflect on my 2013 year and say farewell to my blog readers. I might continue writing again in the future if I decide to have a more professional personal website.

In overall, 2013 is not a very good year for me. However, I’m still happy because I have successfully upgraded my knowledge in 2013 by obtaining two professional certifications. Ironically, this success have not yet followed with another success in terms of climbing up the career ladder as two companies rejected me after I attended their respective face to face interviews. I still suspect the complicated extension of my working visa that will expire in February 2014 as the main reason for companies to reject me even though I have tried my very best to find a support through an external visa consultancy expert. Fingers crossed that there will be an ultimate good answer in January 2014 regarding my job hunting progress.

Meanwhile, I would also like to give tribute to the managers and directors of my work place in 2013, Breeze & Wyles Solicitors LLP. They have been outstanding when I was working there, particularly by giving a generous offer to sponsor me in extending my working visa, even though I declined it afterwards because of my own intention to change my current circumstances. I remember sometimes I felt dejected and the other time I felt the necessity of getting out of my comfort zone. Overall, I worked there with fantastic and nice people, which are rarely to be found in most companies nowadays. I’m proud that I have worked there and delivered each project with P.R.I.D.E (Personal Responsibility In the Delivery of Excellence), which is the motto popularized by the main director of the company.

In terms of personal things, I feel delighted that I could still enjoy some memorable vacations in 2013. In mid-March until early April during Easter holiday, I had 2 weeks off granted by my manager to return home. It was an alienate as well as a great feeling to be back home and saw those warm smiles of my parent, brother, family, and friends, and also to drive a car again (after barely two and a half years without driving at all!) In early August, I finally visited the most beautiful place in the UK: the world heritage Jurassic Coast in Weymouth, particularly the Durdle Door. It was a 3 hours journey by train with 75% special discounted fare in August only from London Waterloo to Weymouth so I (and my friend Randy, who joined me for that trip) started early that day, at 9 AM and arrived in Weymouth at 12 PM. We ate the best Fish and Chips ever as our lunch before heading to the Durdle Door at 3 PM by riding a local bus that only run every 2 hours during summer. Thankfully it was a sunny day and the scenery was simply breath-taking and spectacular. Sadly we had to return back by 5 PM to catch the train back at 6 PM and arrived back in London at 9 PM. Another fantastic vacation that I enjoyed was my 1 week trip to Italy from 14 September 2013 until 22 September 2013. I joined my friend Andres, who is accompanied by two of his friends. I travelled between four cities, from Milan – Rome – Florence – Pisa – Venice – Milan. Among those four cities, I enjoyed Florence and Venice the most despite I visited the Giuseppe Meazza stadium in Milan for three times because of me being a supporter of Inter Milan FC. I love how lively Florence is during the night notwithstanding being a smaller city in comparison with Milan and Rome. Pisa is just the trademark Pisa and Venice is totally amazing, as illustrated by the most beautiful picture I’ve ever taken in the photo gallery above.

Chapter 44: A New Square One

As I mentioned in my previous blog post, I have finally decided to move to a new place and started my new job just after 2012 Christmas Day. Currently, I’m living in the closest large market town to London Stansted airport called Bishop’s Stortford. The town is located north east of London and commutable by train from London Liverpool Street station for an approximately 1 hour journey.

I’m currently back to a new square one, working as a Software Developer by temporarily replacing someone, who’s on a maternity leave. Hence, I’m responsible to hit the ground running and directly improve current projects within the company. The company itself is a reputable law firm around East Hertfordshire, called Breeze & Wyles Solicitors LLP.

One of the projects that I’ve targeted myself to swiftly accomplish is to completely redesign the company’s website. The company websites that I’m responsible for redesigning is Breezeplus+ website, which is more focused on selling their products, providing online Conveyancing quotes, and collating feedback from their customers via online surveys.

I’ve started this project by redesigning the Breezeplus+ website. The old design of this website is still comfortable for users to explore; nevertheless, there are still unordered links and also design inconsistencies between the home page and other pages. This design inconsistencies was indirectly caused by the HTML files within each page in the code behind. Based on these findings, I then decided to utilize the Master Page feature of ASP.NET as the website framework to provide a more consistent design throughout the whole website. Additionally, I have also adopted the HTML5 Bootstrap theme to build a responsive and state-of-the-art User Interface that shall enhance the visitor’s experience when exploring the website. It was a very challenging project for me because of my lack of working experience in website development. The new design for Breezeplus+ website can be accessed online at http://www.breezeplus.co.uk

Chapter 43: A Memorable Journey

Finally, after quite few months’ hiatus, I continue updating my blog again. My last blog post was about my job induction at The Rooflight Company. This blog post focuses on my working experience in The Rooflight Company, particularly regarding my main projects, which were the software development project of production time’s calculator for Bespoke Rooflight products and the product configurator add-in development project of Blinds Rooflight Accessories products.

Beautiful scenery of Burford

Working in The Rooflight Company was simply a memorable journey. As I mentioned in Chapter 41, one of the reasons is because the people in the company have been very friendly and supportive towards me, which obviously bring a positive impact to my daily working performance. Another reason is because of the beautiful scenery of the West Oxfordshire area, which I usually enjoyed when I commuted by bus from my digs in Witney through Minster Lovell and Burford before arriving at my work place in Shipton-under-Wychwood. These areas are part of a famous countryside tourism spot named the Cotswolds. To work as an ERP Technician in a beautiful rural area in a “one to watch” companies (based on the Best Companies Index) was definitely one of my best achievements in the UK; thus, I’m very grateful for the wonderful opportunity that was given for me to experience.

Apart from being a “one to watch” company, another working commitment of The Rooflight Company is focusing on the continuous improvement of the customer satisfaction. For example, my project in developing the product configurator add-in of Blinds Rooflight Accessories products was intended to support the online shop, which can be conveniently used by customers to get a quotation based on their customized choice on Blinds’ attributes, such as blinds’ colours, blinds’ types and rooflight’ types. My other project in developing the Bespoke Production Times calculator software was also proposed to improve the delivery time of the Bespoke Rooflight products and consequently will improve customer’s satisfaction. As illustrated in the business process improvement diagrams that I have attached above, this software should also indirectly improve the business process of the Bespoke Rooflight manufacturing because some parts of the process that requires validation of accurate production times from the production team can be replaced with a simplified process of calculating the production times by using this software. Another example of the high customer satisfaction commitment by the company is a thorough process of Quality Control for the raw parts of the Bespoke Rooflight products that has been on a weekly basis by an expert QC Inspector, who regularly visits the supplier’s raw parts manufacturing site in Stoke-on-Trent.

Sadly, after 5 months of working period as an ERP technician in The Rooflight Company, I decided to resign from my job role just before the Christmas holidays. There are some factors that have driven me to take this decision, although primarily it’s because I would like to explore a new challenge in a different IT job role. Nevertheless, as my first full-time job in the UK, my experience of working in The Rooflight Company has become an irreplaceable piece of memory that will last forever in my mind.

2012 in review

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2012 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

600 people reached the top of Mt. Everest in 2012. This blog got about 5,900 views in 2012. If every person who reached the top of Mt. Everest viewed this blog, it would have taken 10 years to get that many views.
