Chapter 1 : First Step
After graduated from STTS in April 2009, I have 7 months before the graduation ceremony in November 2009. At that time, my mind was focused on how to get a job. Dad said to me that I should pursue a Master degree, but I still hadn’t seriously responded to his opinion. I wanted to get a simple job for a year, before I continue my study. I tried to apply for a job at several companies. Until June 2009, not even one of them offered me a job so I thought that I should do something else.
I started to collect some information about postgraduate study in different countries. I still remember the first time I searched for this information in the USA study exhibition. I went there with my friend, Billy. When we arrived there, every study consultant spoke English (because they are native). I still remember how Billy and I felt uneasy and a little bit shy when we asked them several queries about the study.
Beside USA, other countries that I’m interested in continuing my study are Canada and New Zealand. I asked some information about study in these two countries in the education exhibition held by one of several well-known education consultants in Surabaya. This education consultant told me that I must take a TOEFL test. They offered me a TOEFL placement test and it would cost me 100 thousands rupiah. I agreed to take it and then later I found out my paper based TOEFL placement test result is quite good. Then, they offered me to join the TOEFL preparation class in their place.
It’s not me if I don’t compare things. I went to Direct English, and asked them about the TOEFL preparation program in their place. I’m quite interested with it and finally decided to join the TOEFL preparation in Direct English because the teachers is fully native speakers and they have a special test module which is quite similar with the real Internet based TOEFL test, so that I could do some practice using it and received a full benefit from it. I never regret my decision to join the TOEFL preparation program in Direct English. I was taught by Mr. Alex and Miff (Mr. John). Mr. Alex is very smart. On the other hand, Miff is fully organized and taught students in an excellent way. I learned quickly and when I took the test in the end of August, my score was 95, and that score is enough to qualify for most postgraduate study requirement.
alow mas andi… perkenalkan nama sy emil. sy sudah di terima di brunel university jurusan health and behaviour psychology untuk september intake 2011. sy mau tanya mas andi, berhubung sy sudah berkeluarga sy berencana akan membawa anak sy umur 3 tahun dan suami sy. bagaimana dengan kehidupan disana? apakah ada nursery di area brunel?? lalu apakah mudah untuk mendapatkan pekerjaan disana khususnya untuk suami sy. rata rata untuk rental flat di dekat kampus berapa ya?

Hallo mbak Emil, nama saya Andy Bexlim dan saya suda diterima di Brunel bidang Design, Strategy and Innovation. Saya juga sudah berkeluarga (2 anak dan 1 istri, tentunya hehe…) dan berencana bawa mereka. Tapi sepertinya tidak bisa berangkat bareng saya karena terlalu mepet waktunya untuk ngurus sekolah anak-anak dsb. Jadi mungkin mereka akan menyusul bbrp bulan kemudian. bisa refer ke Chapter 20 saya mas. Lebih singkatnya, kalau standard hall di Clifton, kamar mandi sama dapur share 10-11 flatmates, jadi tergantung luck juga (untungnya flatmates saya ga terlalu jorok). Di dalam kamar ada wastafel, meja tulis, lemari pakaian, room heater. Kalau ensuite hall di Isambard, kamar mandi-nya di dalam kamar, konsekuensi-nya kamar jadi lebih sempit. Vacuum cleaner disediakan. Water heater dan Iron juga disediakan, tapi saya beli ketel listrik sendiri. Microwave tergantung ada warisan dari anak tahun lalu yang masih berfungsi baik atau tidak. Untuk kasus saya, kita terpaksa patungan beli karena memang dibutuhkan tapi tidak disediakan.
